An intense weekend for the 6th seminar of the High Studies for Security and Defence
Seminar 6 on the theme ‘Great Power Politics’ was an opportunity to experience a weekend full of fascinating discussions and surprising discoveries. A look back at the highlights of the HSSD!
Presentations that leave their mark
The seminar began with an analysis of the strategic issues in Northeast Asia by Prof. Dr Elena Atanassova-Cornelis. This presentation provided an insight into the complex dynamics of this region, which is essential for future decision-makers in the field of security and defence.
Then, Gie Goris, a journalist at MO*, immersed us in the intricacies of Indian politics with his presentation entitled ‘India schaakt op 10 borden tegelijk. Kan het winnen?’ (‘India is playing on ten boards at the same time. Can it win?’). He gave an overview of how India navigates several fronts simultaneously, giving participants (the ‘auditors’) a crucial key to understanding the strategies of this emerging country.
Bernard Siman’s presentation on hybrid warfare and China revealed unexpected hidden dangers, leaving the auditors in a state of shock. Understanding hybrid warfare is vital for security professionals, as it combines conventional and unconventional military tactics, often used by powers such as China to achieve their objectives without triggering open conflict.
Jonathan Holslag, known for his media appearances, also captivated attention with his analysis of China’s role on the world scene. His presentation highlighted China’s global ambitions and their implications for international security, a topic that was essential for HSSD auditors.
Lively discussions
The discussions did not end there.
Prof. Dr Tanguy Struye de Swielande explored the legacy of the Biden administration and the return of Trump. This analysis is crucial to understanding the fluctuations of American foreign policy and its impact on global security.
Dr Bruno Hellendorff provided a fascinating perspective on the Indo-Pacific with his presentation entitled ‘L’Indopacifique ou le basculement du monde’ (‘The Indo-Pacific or the Tipping Point of the World’). He explained how this region is becoming the new geopolitical centre of gravity, an essential key to anticipating future security challenges.
In conclusion
This seminar was a real success, offering in-depth analyses and enriching discussions on the world’s major powers. Auditors left with a better understanding of current geopolitical issues.
