Biografie

Giulia Prelz Oltramonti is onderzoekster Zuidoostelijk nabuurschap aan het Studiecentrum voor Veiligheid en Defensie (SCVD). Ze is ook lid van het REPI (Recherche et études en politique internationale) van de Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB). Voor ze in februari 2025 bij de SCVD kwam, was ze universitair hoofddocent internationale betrekkingen aan de European School of Political and Social Sciences (ESPOL) van de Université Catholique de Lille en docent aan de ULB en de Université catholique de Louvain. Ze heeft als consultant expertise geleverd aan het maatschappelijk middenveld en internationale organisaties en heeft ervaring met politieke campagnes en internationale hulpverlening.
Giulia behaalde een doctoraat in politieke wetenschappen aan de ULB, waar ze een proefschrift verdedigde over politieke oorlogseconomieën (“The exploitation of economic leverage in conflict protraction: modes and aims. The cases of South Ossetia and Abkhazia”). Ze heeft ook een MA in oorlogsstudies van Kings College London en een BA in Europese sociale en politieke studies van het University College London.
Haar onderzoek richt zich op conflicten in de post-Sovjetruimte en gebieden met betwiste soevereiniteit. Ze publiceert over kwesties met betrekking tot politieke economieën van conflicten in de Kaukasus, processen van grens- en grenslijnenvorming in het Oostelijk nabuurschap, de levensvatbaarheid van betwiste staten en alternatieve diplomatieke praktijken van secessionistische entiteiten. Ze houdt zich ook bezig met de wisselwerking tussen oorlog en internationaal recht in de specifieke context van betwiste staten.
