Participation of HSSD’s 4th cycle in the Land Day 2024: an event not to be missed
On 24 October 2024, the auditors of the High Studies for Security and Defence had the honour of taking part in the Land Day, a key annual event organised by the general staff of the Belgian army. This day is much more than a simple meeting: it is a key moment to understand the current challenges in Defence and to strengthen the links between the strategic players in the sector.
What is the Land Day?
Every year, the Land Day brings together more than 1,300 professionals from the military, civilian, political, academic and industrial sectors. Designed as a forum for discussion and reflection, the event explores key strategic issues for the Belgian land forces and national Defence.
The 2024 edition, on the theme ‘Towards Combat Readiness’, focused on the major ongoing transformations within the Land Component. The day was punctuated by:
- visits to specialised stands and schools to discover innovations in security and defence;
- a high-level lecture by Prof. Jack Watling (Royal United Services Institute) on the lessons learnt from the conflict in Ukraine;
- an enriching debate with military, industrial and academic leaders, moderated by Prof. Nina Wilén (Egmont Institute).
In the evening, more than 1,000 participants gathered at a reception, where they could exchange views on the future ambitions and challenges facing Belgian Defence.
Why is a participation in the Land Day important for the 4th cycle?
The 4th cycle, organised by the Royal Higher Institute for Defence with the support of the Egmont Institute, aims to provide high-level training in strategic security and defence issues. Taking part in the Land Day is perfectly in line with this objective:
- Immersion in current challenges for Defence
Auditors have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of current strategic issues, such as new approaches to combat readiness or the impact of international conflicts on national security. - Meetings with experts and key decision-makers
The Land Day provides an opportunity to make valuable contacts with key players from the military, academic, industrial and civilian sectors. These exchanges enrich strategic discussions and foster the development of solid networks. - Facing the concrete reality
Thanks to demonstrations and presentations by experts, auditors are able to compare the theory they have learnt during the seminars with the reality of operational challenges. - A lever for developing a global vision
Taking part in an event such as the Land Day enables auditors to adopt a broader perspective, which is essential for decision-makers involved in security and defence.
