The world and Europe are transitioning to a new era and international order, leading to potentially unstable and threatening years ahead. In this context, as sea routes are vital to Western societies, it is essential to protect maritime security. On 16 April 2024, under the Belgian Presidency of the Council of the EU, the Royal Higher Institute for Defence (RHID) and the Centre for Security and Defence Studies (CSDS) organised a seminar on maritime security focusing on the regions facing the most immediate dangers, namely the North Sea, the Mediterranean Sea, the Black Sea, the Gulf of Guinea and the Strait of Hormuz. Drawing on the outcomes of this seminar and summarising its main take-aways and recommendations, this report emphasises the necessity of an approach tailoring policies and capacities to each region’s unique environment.
