Saoedi-Arabië en Iran
Historiek van een koude oorlog

Luk SANDERS

Ever since the creation of the Islamic Republic of Iran in 1979, relations between that country and Saudi Arabia always have been strained. Not only is it a clash between Shia and Sunni Islam, between Persian and Arab culture, or between a republican model and a monarchy, they are also – and mainly – fighting for regional domination, doing permanent damage to the Middle East region (e.g. in Lebanon, Iraq, Syria, Yemen, Qatar…), with disastrous consequences.

Even though Western superpowers are backing Saudi Arabia, since the American invasion of Iraq in 2003, chances seem to have turned to the advantage of Iran. Nowadays, Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman is desperate to reverse this trend in favour of his country, some even say in his own personal favour.
